The Future of Language Technologies in the Age of AI: Safeguarding Linguistic Diversity and Digital Sovereignty

calendar_month Nov 05 — Nov 06, 2026

The Future of Language Technologies in the Age of AI is a landmark international conference in Galway organized as part of Ireland’s 2026 Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Bringing together government leaders, EU institutions, technology companies, researchers, and language communities, the conference aims to place linguistic diversity and digital sovereignty at the center of Europe’s emerging AI agenda and to catalyze concrete, longer-term EU action.

The Future of Language Technologies in the Age of AI will take place in Galway, Ireland, on November 5–6, 2026, as an official event of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Organized by the Irish government, Údarás na Gaeltachta, and Dublin City University’s ADAPT Centre, the conference will bring together leading figures from government, the European Commission, the technology and AI industries, academia, and language communities to address linguistic diversity and digital sovereignty in the age of AI.

The conference will serve as an opportunity to shape European policy and investment around languages that remain underrepresented in AI and digital technologies. Building on an earlier San Francisco pre-summit, the Galway meeting will combine international and industry case studies, technical and policy research, and high-level discussions of data ownership, language rights, and AI. Its principal ambition is to secure concrete EU-level commitments and establish a continuing European program extending through the subsequent Lithuanian and Greek EU presidencies.
